"What are you thinking about?" David asked, noticing the distant look in my eyes. "You look like you're a thousand miles away."

"I was just thinking about the word 'burden,'" I said softly, swirling the amber liquid in my glass. "I used to think it was my middle name. I thought that to be loved, I had to be useful. I had to be the one who fixed the cars, paid the bills, and hid in the basement so others could have the sunlight."

The table went quiet, not with the awkwardness of a secret revealed, but with the heavy weight of empathy.

"You were a lighthouse for people who weren't even lost," Clara said, her voice gentle. "They just liked the light. But a lighthouse doesn't have to move. It just stands there. You’ve finally stopped trying to swim out to save people who won't even kick their legs."

I looked around the room. My books were on the shelves—not in boxes. My art was on the walls—not tucked away to make room for someone else’s mirrors. I realized that for the first time in my life, I wasn't waiting for the other shoe to drop. I wasn't waiting for a phone call demanding a favor or a guilt trip disguised as a "family emergency."

"I'm not a lighthouse anymore," I said, a genuine, easy smile spreading across my face. "I'm just a woman having dinner with her friends. And that is more than enough."

We spent the rest of the night laughing until our ribs ached. When they finally left, they didn't leave a mess for me to scrub or a list of grievances to ponder. They left me with a sense of fullness that had nothing to do with the food.

I locked the door, leaned my back against it, and listened to the silence. It wasn't the silence of being alone; it was the silence of being at peace. I was no longer a resource to be mined. I was a person to be known. And as I turned off the lights and headed to my own bedroom—the one with the large windows and the softest sheets—I knew I would never settle for anything less again.
